Kay, you may be thinking about IUS Continuing Studies Division which has adult classes you can sign up for. Try this link -
Continuing Studies home page: http://www.ius.edu/ContinuingStudies/

And you can always come to my workshop. :-)

I took a creative writing course at IUS when Mr. Devon was teaching. I was chosen for his workshop, but really never was able to complete a story we were working on because sadly he passed away.

I was wondering if there were any creative writing courses offered to the public as before. I have not been able to find any on the website and am just getting back into writing.

Thank you for any advise you can offer.

The way I was taught, for essays (fiction, of course, is entirely different), is that a paragraph should have an introduction and conclusion, and argument in the middle. Each paragraph is a micro-essay: intro (or transition from preceding paragraph), supporting points, conclusion.

This is a good way to start learning what makes a paragraph cohere. Once you learn the basic rule and have mastered it, you are allowed to break it. If you don't understand how to tell if certain sentences need to be together, then no defined number of sentences will make a good paragraph. But by it's very nature, the intro/points/conclusion structure points toward a minimum number of sentences.

The problem arises when it's the number, not the structure, that becomes the focus.

Michael,
Thanks so much for the wonderful reading last Sunday. It was enjoyable and informative, and the reading, music, and personalities came together in a way that seemed...planned, maybe? It was great!
