Louisville, KY – True stories, live music and great coffee will be served up at a special event to benefit Kentuckians For The Commonwealth.

The Mountain-Lovin,’ Tree-Huggin’ Coffee Hour (and-a-Half) will take place Sunday, Dec. 13, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Glassworks 815 West Market Street, Louisville, KY.

“The event is free, but we are suggesting a minimum $5 donation,” said Michael Jackman, who heads the Writers Workshop Project. The event is being co-sponsored by the Writers Workshop Project and New Southerner Magazine.

Funds raised will benefit KFTC and its efforts to end mountaintop removal mining. “Part of my mission is to create spoken word and music performances that showcase great talent and also benefit worthy causes,” said Jackman. The WWP previously sponsored a performance to benefit the Kentucky Coalition for the Homeless.

“We hope to not only raise money, but raise awareness of the travesties brought on by destructive mining practices. The time for renewable energy is now,” said Bobbi Buchanan, founding editor of New Southerner Magazine. The magazine’s contributors have volunteered to participate in the event, and its advisory board members have contributed signed copies of books that will be given away as door prizes.

“There’s a growing community of folks with values that veer from mainstream consumer culture. We want to raise our own food, support local farmers, live gently and with purpose. If you have any interest in being more self-sufficient, environmentally responsible and supportive of local economies, then you don’t want to miss this event,” Buchanan said.

Among the performers will be singer-songwriter Leigh Ann Yost and poet Marianne Worthington, author of Larger Bodies Than Mine, which received the 2007 Appalachian Book of the Year Award for Poetry. Also included in the line-up: Kimberly Anderson, Michael Jackman, D. Cameron Lawrence and Meagen Neal.

The artists will be selling books and CDs during intermission and immediately following the event.

The Writers Workshop Project, holds events and teaching workshops dedicated to helping writers create community, learn craft and workshop drafts. It was founded four years ago by Michael Jackman, a local writer and lecturer in writing at Indiana University Southeast. The organization also sponsors the Creative Cocktails media mixer.

New Southerner is an online quarterly magazine of arts, alternative living and literature. An annual anthology of the magazine’s content appears in print and will be available for purchase at the event.
